For Rehabilitation

GaitSmart™ is a revolutionary tool that should be in the toolkit for any healthcare professional who has to consider mobility in their work. GaitSmart allows an individual’s lower limbs, including hips to be analyzed in a matter of minutes and provides detailed clinical data.

The data analysis is completely objective and cannot be altered in any way. This means that GaitSmart is perfect to provide objective, quantifiable data, that can support injury diagnosis, rehabilitation and performance improvement.

All the sensors are connected to the laptop that contains the purpose designed software and they are synchronised together so that they all have the same time, which takes a few seconds.

The sensors are then applied one to each calf and one to each thigh, and can be retained in place with individual self-retaining wraps which can be placed over clothing if required.

The sensors are able to measure over 100 angle measurements per second. The sensors measure forwards and backwards movement as well as side to side movement (sagittal and coronal).

The individual can then walk or run while wearing the sensors. When completed, the sensors are removed and are re-connected to the laptop. The software then extracts the data from the sensors and co-ordinates the information. Within a few moments the results are available to be viewed on the screen, printed or emailed. The analysis does not require a qualified individual to operate.

GaitSmart has developed a traffic light system for the software which will easily highlight any issues. If more detail is required then the supporting detailed data can be reviewed.

GaitSmart is quick and easy to use, it is not invasive in its operation which means that regular monitoring of individuals is now feasible on a day-today basis.

GaitSmart can also be applied to prosthetic limbs. This means that it is now possible, using GaitSmart, to provide objective data on which prosthetic limb allows the optimum movement profile for an individual, and to understand what affect the prosthesis is having on the good leg.

Orthopaedic Consultant

As an orthopaedic consultant, specifically working in areas that affect the movement of an individual, you will need to understand exactly how the movement of an individual is affected. When you perform your initial assessment and diagnosis, GaitSmart is the only system that can allow you to dynamically assess the movement of your patient in any environment.

You can replicate the normal situation where the problem affects the patient and you can even exacerbate the situation by placing them into more testing environments, like on slopes or stairs.

Following treatment, regular monitoring with GaitSmart allows you to closely follow the rehabilitation process and will support any treatment decision-making process that you may have. It is almost impossible to identify movement variations of less than 30 degrees and when you are trying to look at a number of areas at the same time, it makes the identification even harder.

GaitSmart will easily identify minor changes in movement and the effect that the changes have on the overall gait profile. Moreover, GaitSmart does not need to be operated by qualified personnel. It is only the resultant data that needs experienced review. This means that testing can take place outside of the consultation, thereby freeing up more valuable time for you.

GaitSmart can also help you in some of the areas which most commonly lead to claims like:

  • Poor outcome following a fracture
  • Poor outcome following a hip replacement
  • Disparity in leg length following a hip replacement
  • Poor outcome following a knee operation

GaitSmart can also ensure that the patient undergoes the right amount of rehabilitation for their problem; ensuring that your time with them is optimised.

Quickly obtainable, objective data to support diagnosis and rehabilitation

Physical Therapist (PT)

As a PT you have responsibility for getting the players back to full mobility. There are a number of tools at your disposal to help with the rehabilitation process, but there is still a certain amount of subjectivity involved.

Many decisions are based upon reviewing with the naked eye or possibly video. Questions will be asked including questions about pain, heat and swelling. Often the interrogation of the patient is key to the rehabilitation decision-making process.

GaitSmart can identify minor changes in the movement of an individual. If regular monitoring has taken place, the latest results can be compared to previous baseline data and changes will be obvious.

Also, the baseline data that you have on an individual will show you where you need to be for the patient to be deemed to have made a full recovery. Regular monitoring through rehabilitation will allow you to see the recovery path. You will be able to ensure that recovery is not too quick, which can cause setbacks. You will also be able to identify plateaus in the recovery path which will warn you of the need to review the treatment and possibly try alternative treatment methods.

The traffic light system in the GaitSmart software and will allow you to quickly review the details and immediately identify any areas of concern. The more data that you produce with the system, the more the results can be fine-tuned if you wish.

GaitSmart will provide you with clinical, objective data to support your rehabilitation process. This will ensure that you have the right information to support the treatment decision-making process.

You would also be able to offer analyses using GaitSmart to the public. This would provide them with a gait profile in a healthy condition. It will give them important data for rehabilitation should they suffer an injury in the future and apart from the business this will generate, it will also increase your chances of being their healthcare provider of choice should an injury occur.

Another important benefit from GaitSmart is the psychological effect that an objective report has on the commitment from the patient to a prescribed rehab or training regime. The ability to be able to have documented evidence of progress empowers the patient.

Confirm diagnosis, identify treatment plans and manage rehabilitation while growing your business with GaitSmart.

Prosthetist

As a prosthetist, you will need to make decisions on design and selection from a range of components to create the optimum replacement limb for your patient.

When the legs are the area of focus, GaitSmart is invaluable. While the patient may look level and may appear to move acceptably, there are other key areas that also need to be considered. For example, if the patient has a lower limb prosthetic, it is important that the prosthesis allows the normal leg to obtain the optimum amount of flexion. If the flexion in the normal leg is reduced by the choice of prosthesis, then any impact while walking will be transferred through the knee directly to the hip. This will eventually lead to other problems for the patient. It is virtually impossible to see and to quantify the flexion demonstrated in the stance phase. GaitSmart can provide detailed measurement information that will immediately allow you to identify the prosthesis that is the best fit for your patient.

You will also be able to offer ongoing analysis of the patient to ensure that the prosthesis continues to operate as it should.

GaitSmart sensors are able to be attached to any calf or thigh prosthesis very easily. An analysis can be completed in minutes and does not need to be performed by a qualified healthcare professional.

GaitSmart will provide you with objective, quantifiable data on which to base your decisions.

As GaitSmart can be operated by anybody, it will enable you to focus your time in the areas where your expertise is required and will allow you to maintain a going relationship with your patients through regular aftercare assessments.

GaitSmart eliminates the guesswork for the prosthetist.

Orthotist

As an orthotist you will have to assess patients to identify whether they need to have an orthosis designed to reposition the body or to provide relief from discomfort.

GaitSmart can provide you with objective, quantifiable data that will provide you with accurate detail on the way the individual is moving. This data can be used to support your normal investigative process.

Once you have decided upon the specifics of the orthosis that is required and you have overseen the fitting process, you can analyse using GaitSmart to confirm that the patient is now moving as you intended. The GaitSmart system will allow you to understand in detail how the person is now moving, whether they are moving symmetrically and whether stress is being transferred elsewhere. This will accommodate any fine tuning that may be required.

Patients can also be assessed ongoing to ensure that the orthosis is still acting as intended. The analysis only takes a few minutes and does not need to be performed by a qualified healthcare professional.

GaitSmart will ensure that you make the right decisions upfront, that you do not have unexpected repercussions ongoing and will have an opportunity to have your staff maintain an ongoing relationship through analysis with your patients.

Osteopath

As an osteopath, you will be faced with many different conditions to diagnose and treat. Often, specifically with backs and knees, these conditions will affect the way that the patient moves.

GaitSmart will allow you to see how the problem manifests itself in the movement of the individual.

GaitSmart will also let you see and quantify the improvement in the mobility of the patient as your treatment progresses.

When the condition directly affects the legs of the individual then the objective data provided by GaitSmart will be invaluable in aiding your diagnosis.
