Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS (NHS GGC) Falls Prevention Service and GaitSmart officially began their partnership this week to provide objective gait assessments and personalised exercise plans to Falls Exercise class patients.

We completed meetings with Amanda Sheridan, Falls Team Occupational Therapy Lead and Lesley Goldie, Specialist Physiotherapist where we finalised the details of the protocol to be followed throughout the course of the project.

Paula Gahagan has joined the NHS GGC Falls Prevention team to provide GaitSmart assessments and personalised exercise plans for patients in the Falls Exercise classes.

All patients that take part in the project with NHS GGC and GaitSmart will continue with their regular Falls Exercise class but will be assessed by Paula using the GaitSmart system and then will receive their objective, colour-coded report as well as a set of exercises that are specifically focused upon the issues that the GaitSmart report identifies.

The patient will follow their personalised exercise plan at home for a four-week period, at which time the patient will be re-assessed by Paula using the GaitSmart system, and a new report and personalised exercise plan will be produced for the patient.

The patients will receive four GaitSmart assessments, one every four weeks, throughout their twelve-week tenure with the Falls Exercise class.
